
ART THERAPY DEFINED
Art therapy is a unique form of psychotherapy, the client creates art using a variety of art media and an art directive, facilitated by an art therapist. The focus is primarily on the process not the product. Client and therapist together, explore feelings and emotions the work evokes in the individual. This creative process encourages resolution of emotional conflict, management of behaviors and addictions, fosters self-awareness, promotes self-esteem and can reduce anxiety. A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client’s overall personal sense of well-being.
Art therapists are required to have knowledge of the varying forms of the visual arts, sculpture, drawing, painting. As well as extensive training in psychology, human development, and counseling theories and techniques. The therapist is also required to obtain a Master’s Degree in art therapy, pass a board certification exam and, in NY state, obtain and maintain licensure to practice.
